Scrubs

The creators of scrubs made some interesting parallels between the characters of Scrubs and the characters of The Wizard of Oz in the episode “My Way Home”. By looking at the character JD you can better understand the character Dorothy. JD is called in from his day off to work. All JD wants to do is find his way back home but people keep on needing his attention to help them solve their own problems. JD does what he can to help but at the end of the day people realize that they were capable of solving their problems on their own. Dorothy has the same role in The Wizard of Oz as JD does in Scrubs.

Cro-Magnon Karma

Pathos is emphasized the most in “Cro-Magnon Karma”. The author uses emotion to connect to his reader, especially his male readers that can identify to what the author is talking about. The author, Chris Godsey shares his personal stories with the reader. For example during his college years he was constantly unsatisfied with his body. He would look at himself in the mirror for long periods of time and obsess about his imperfections. A lot of men can identify to him because they also struggle with their body image.

This use of pathos is very effective in the overall piece. Using emotion allows the readers to better understand both the author his essay. People can connect with the author because they have also experienced the feeling of not being attractive enough. The feeling of being physically inadequate is something we all experience and have emotions about. The author tries to expose these emotions to the reader so they can better understand their insecurities and the insecurities of others.
